East Ayrshire Fairtrade Group

East Ayrshire - Fairtrade Zone

A Fairtrade Zone

We successfully gained Fairtrade Zone status for East Ayrshire on 7th October 2016, in recognition of our efforts in promoting Fairtrade to consumers, business and community groups.

We renew our Fairtrade status every 2 years – our next renewal is in August 2023.

Supported by East Ayrshire Council, who are committed to supporting Fairtrade, we continue to raise awareness about the importance of Fairtrade, throughout East Ayrshire.

What is Fairtrade?

Fairtrade is a system of certification that aims to ensure a set of standards are met in the production and supply of a product or ingredient.  Fairtrade is about social, economic and environmental justice.

Choosing Fairtrade means standing with farmers for fairness and equality, against some of the biggest challenges the world faces. It means farmers creating change, from investing in climate friendly farming techniques to developing women in leadership.

With Fairtrade you change the world a little bit every day. Through simple shopping choices you are showing businesses and governments that you believe in fair and just trade.

Who are we?

A diverse team with a variety of backgrounds, who want to see the lives of farmers and workers improved in developing countries by raising awareness of Fairtrade.

We have meetings every 3 months to arrange opportunities to raise awareness about Fairtrade.

What do we do?

We set up information stalls throughout East Ayrshire, providing opportunities to taste Fairtrade chocolate, buy Fairtrade goods, contact our local MP, MSPs, businesses, schools, faith groups, to encourage them to buy Fairtrade goods.

We support towns and villages in East Ayrshire to become registered with the Fairtrade Foundation.

Fairtrade Fortnight

For two weeks each year at the end of February and start of March, thousands of individuals, companies and groups across the UK come together to share the stories of the people who grow our food and drinks, mine our gold and who grow the cotton in our clothes. People who are often exploited and underpaid.
